No Fads or Quackery

At Healthy Supplies, we only sell products that we understand and believe in.

From time to time there are debates in the media about particular aspects of health or health products. Whilst there are some things that are more or less beyond debate, such as the importance of fruit, other topics remain controversial. This makes it tricky for people like us at Healthy Supplies to know which products to include on the site, and which products not to include.

Our approach is to make an honest decision between ourselves, and work out which products we ourselves would buy, and which products we would not. Factors that guide our decisions include:

  • Scientific evidence: Where there is clear scientific evidence that something is good, we will take this as a big weight in its favour.
  • Obviousness: Some things, like fruit, are obviously good for you, so we do try to include as many fruit-based products as we can. There are other obvious things to say about nutrition, such as the importance of fibre and not eating too much fat, which we consider when selecting food products.
  • Un-processedness: We hold as a general principle that simple, whole-foods with as few additives as possible are preferable to foods that contain huge amounts of unnecessary ingredients. For example, almost all of the nuts that we sell are unsalted, and we favour dried fruit that contains no preservatives (a lot of people don't realise how many preservatives are in some dried fruit).
  • Customer feedback: We take the experiences of our customers seriously, and consider products that people ask for, though we always evaluate these products first. We ran a pharmacy for several years before setting up Healthy Supplies, so we have a lot of experience with what works for people and what does not. We will also try things out ourselves if possible.
  • Exaggeration: We really dislike exaggeration. If we felt that we had to exaggerate about a product in order to sell it, then we would rather not sell it.
  • Judgement: Where there is a lack of scientific consensus about a particular product, we ultimately have to make a judgement about a product. For example, some herbal medicines have had mixed results in clinical trials; in such cases, we try to make the best judgement that we can. See our rejected products and clinical trials pages for more.

Overall, we hope that you will agree that the products on this site are pretty sensible. We have rejected many, including detox foot-pads, copper bracelets and other completely unproven remedies. We think that crystals are pretty, but won't cure your cold. And whilst there is some evidence to support things like homoeopathy, we don't believe that it is strong enough for us to justify listing homoeopathy products on our site. However, we do believe that some alternative treatments are fantastic. For example, valerian and hops really do help people with insomnia, and the evidence does suggest that glucosamine really helps with joint health. Tea tree oil is a powerful antimicrobial with a number of uses, and aromatherapy certainly promotes a feeling of wellbeing, regardless of whether or not it directly cures disease. It's also worth noting that many of the drugs that we use today, such as penicillin and aspirin, were used centuries ago as "natural treatments".

Overall, we at Healthy Supplies reject many of the faddish diets treatments that pop up from time to time. But these are always rejected on a case-by-case basis, rather than dismissing them out of hand. We only list a product if we are able to extol its virtues with confidence. If you are unsure about the reasons for inclusion (or non-inclusion) of a product on our website, do contact us and we will do our best to explain!
