Are nuts good for you? Yes, they are! Nuts are fantastic little packages of fibre, protein, healthy fats and minerals. They’re so good for human health that even if they didn’t taste so utterly wonderful, we’d probably still eat them for their superb medicinal value. They’re not just great to munch as snacks, though – nuts are incredibly versatile, and you can use them to make milk, cream, sauces, desserts and even cheese. Many types of nuts also lend themselves wonderfully to grinding down for flour, and can be used in this form to make bread, cakes and biscuits.
Health-wise, although they’re calorie dense, eating a small handful of nuts every day can kickstart various biological processes whereby we actually lose weight. They can also help us maintain heart health, fight diabetes, improve our skin and hair, strengthen our bones and even improve the functioning of our brains. At Healthy Supplies, we spend ages looking for the very best nuts in the world so you don’t have to, so let us take you through some of our very finest examples…
Are cashews the most versatile ingredient on the planet? Name your favourite dish, and the odds are it’s probably possible to make it using cashews. Every vegan knows the power of the cashew – after soaking, they can be whizzed up to make nut milk, cream or cheese. They make wonderful cheesecakes, and perfect cauliflower cheese. Throw some in a stir-fry and they’ll soak up flavours but still retain their own. We’re very happy to sell a massive range of cashews, from Cashew Pieces all the way up to Jumbo Cashews. For an extra-special deep nut flavour, our Roasted Cashews are the bomb! We even have some rather special Jalapeno & Lime Cashews which are the perfect mid-morning snack.
Almonds are one of the very healthiest nuts – high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats, vitamin E, selenium, zinc, calcium, magnesium and B vitamins, and their impressive fibre content helps us feel fuller and promotes a healthy digestive system. They boost your energy levels and improve your brain’s functioning, and best of all, they taste lip-smackingly delicious! As well as Almonds in their skin, we also offer them Blanched (ie. skinless), and for those of you who love to get cracking, you can also buy Almonds in their shell. They also taste wonderful roasted, and they can be used in 101 recipes when ground. For a special treat, we’re also rather proud of our Selected Organic Dark Chocolate Almonds.
Who doesn’t love the creamy taste of coconut? It makes our curries creamier, our desserts ‘come together’ and even finds its way into hundreds of beauty products, not to mention the fact it’s a brilliantly delicious and munchable snack all on its own. We’ve also just introduced what may well be the very finest Organic Virgin Coconut Oil we’ve ever tried. Toasted Coconut has an extremely satisfying flavour, and Coconut Flour is not only Paleo, but perfect for gluten-free cooking, while unrefined, low-GI Organic Coconut Sugar has a lip-smacking caramel sweetness which works brilliantly in all kinds of cakes, biscuits and even stirred into your cuppa!
Brazils are staggeringly good for your brain, your heart, your immune system and the healthy functioning of your thyroid. They’re antioxidant-rich and have strong anti-cancer properties, and while they’re full of fat, it’s healthy fat, and the high level of the amino acid arginine in Brazils actually boosts your body’s fat-burning capabilities. In the kitchen, they’re fabulous in biscuits and trail mixes, and not only can you make Brazil Nut Milk out of them – you can also use them for Parmesan-Style Vegan Cheese. We offer them in their shells or as Broken Brazils too.
Whether you’re a fan of raw skin-on peanuts or Roasted Peanuts – or even the shell-on Monkey Nuts – we have a massive range for you. Whether whizzed up into homemade peanut butter, formed into energy bars, or thrown into an Asian slaw or a noodle stir-fry, peanuts are an excellent source of protein, minerals and vitamins, and they’re lovely and cheap too! And if you’re feeling sophisticated, there’s also some pretty classy Caramel Cocoa Peanuts too!
Walnuts and pecans are so good for your brain, they even look a bit like little brains! Eating them leads to better memory and higher mental flexibility. Not only that – they’ll also help you resist tempting food and achieve weight loss. Our Organic Walnuts have a wonderfully deep flavour, and we’ve also now started selling Walnuts in Shells. Our whole Organic Pecans are in a class of their own, with a knockout flavour and a very toothsome mouth-feel, while the Pecan Pieces are cheaper and perfectly suited to adding to biscuits and trail mixes.
We think everyone should eat nuts every day if possible, and health-wise, when it comes to nuts in their basic form, you can’t really go wrong. Why not try making some pesto with a handful of Pistachios, or tossing some toasted Pine Nuts into a salad or some rice for an extra nutty bite? Have you experienced the intense, sweet chewiness of Tiger Nuts yet? How about the delicately creamy, crunchy taste sensation of Macadamias? And you could do a whole lot worse than scattering some intensely-flavoured, nutritious Hazelnuts into your breakfast muesli, or even making a stack of weekend pancakes with our wonderful gluten-free Chestnut Flour…
