How to Use Pecan Nuts
To many people, pecan nuts are the classier cousins of walnuts – more compact, crispier, and with what many feel is a superior flavour.
Pecans can be used in all the ways walnuts are used, and can add a great textural dimension to dishes, as well as increasing the nutrients and providing a wonderfully rich taste.
Pecans work brilliantly when paired with sweet flavours such as coconut sugar and honey, and they have a great natural affinity with bananas too.
Here are some other excellent ways to use pecan nuts:
Tigernut flour is a fantastic ingredient to use with pecans – it lends a gorgeous sweet nuttiness to dishes, and you don’t need any sugar at all to make a beautifully sweet pastry. Here it’s been combined with wholemeal flour and coconut oil to make superb, crisp and deeply flavoursome patties with a lip-smacking and nutritious filling which combines pecans with bananas for a taste sensation!
Maple syrup has an amazing affinity with pecan nuts, and one of the best ways to use them together is in breakfast cereals. This wonderful granola also contains pecan nut butter, apricots and cinnamon, and is sure to have you jumping out of bed in the morning in anticipation.
Pecans are a great way to jazz up fare such as porridge, overnight oats and rice pudding, as they provide a lovely texture and crunch to the yielding softness of the dish.
This splendid recipe also combines maple syrup, almond milk and goji berries for a wonderful, nutritious morning treat which will set you up for the rest of the day.
Tired of the ubiquitous brownies? Try these fantastic pumpkin pecan blondies! Not only do they derive their sweetness from coconut sugar instead of blood sugar-spiking refined white sugar, they also contain pure pumpkin puree, which adds fibre and richness to these lovely healthy treats, and reduces the amount of fat needed to hold it together. The pecans add a burst of flavour and a delightful crunch.
Apple, Cinnamon & Pecan Puddings
Apples also pair very well with pecan nuts, and this recipe uses both together with cinnamon to produce these delicious little puddings, which look amazing and are also free from refined cane sugar.
They’re also gluten-free and have a lovely sauce made using coconut milk.
