Our Favourite Vegan Christmas Recipes
Christmas can be tricky to navigate when you’re a vegan and most of the people around you aren’t. It’s common to be berated with tasteless anti-vegan jokes by a sherry-doused uncle, or to discover just as you’ve piled your Christmas plate high that your auntie has roasted the potatoes in duck fat, or glazed the parsnips with honey, or made the stuffing with seventeen eggs. Well-meaning relatives sometimes don’t understand that “I’ve taken the bits of meat out of yours” isn’t a very vegan-friendly thing to say, and it’s easy for anyone serving you food to forget something contains gelatin, whey, cochineal or any of thousands of obscure non-vegan ingredients. The best solution is usually to do all the cooking yourself, or to create a yummy dish to bring to the celebration with you.
So if you’re wondering what you can make that’s festive, delicious and vegan, cast your eyes over this appetising list of twelve Christmas dishes for some lip-smackingly tasty, animal-friendly festive food ideas….
This is the ‘meatiest’ vegan roast we’ve ever tried – it’s juicy and substantial, with a delectably savoury taste and fantastic texture. What’s more, it slices brilliantly and is ace for Boxing Day sandwiches too. Best of all, it’s absolutely packed with flavour and nutrition, and is a total sinch to make. This recipe can be adapted to include any herbs and spices you like – you could even throw a handful of dried cranberries into the mix for an extra-zingy festive dimension!
Lentil & Vegetable Vegan Wellington
This magnificent main course looks elegant and impressive as the centrepiece of any festive meal table, and definitely holds its own against any hunk of meat. The walnuts and green lentils work together with the vegetables, bouillon and natural flavourings to create a deeply umami delight that’s incredibly filling and full of fibre, heart-healthy ‘good’ fats and a whole load of vitamins and minerals.
Gluten-Free Vegan Christmas Cake
If you’re vegan and avoiding gluten at Christmas, it can be very difficult getting your hands on a decent cake. Well, don’t panic! Here’s one which is going to blow you away – not only is it packed with luxurious fruit and warming winter spice, but it’s also 100% cane sugar-free as well. For its deep, rich sweetness it uses gorgeous, unrefined coconut sugar, and for its zingy citrus hit and luscious texture, it uses a whole orange and, unusually, some smooth silken tofu, which gives the finished cake a truly amazing mouth feel.
Combining the traditional Christmas flavours of nuts, dried fruit and dark chocolate, these delectable festive treats are so good they’ll be gone in a flash – so you’d better make plenty! We’ve also used stem ginger to give them a tantalising, warm spiciness – but you can add anything you like, to make the recipe your own – we recommend adding some citrus zestiness with candied orange & lemon peel or perhaps the soft, lush sweetness of mixed glace fruit – you could even try taking them in a more tropical direction by adding mango and coconut!
These are so good that they’re excellent served as a main course in their own right with some carrots, peas and gravy – but they’re also really splendid served as stuffing balls as part of your Christmas dinner. It’s the bursts of tangy sweetness from the apricots and the nutty crunch of the sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, combined with the carb hit from the bread and the sweetness of the slow-cooked onions that makes this such a magical dish. They’re so easy to prepare – give them a go!
Gluten-Free Spiced Chocolate Shortbread
Here’s a very munchable delight that will brighten up any festive teatime! This magical tree-shaped choccy shortbread stack is 100% cane sugar-free – and for its deep, rich sweetness it uses blackstrap molasses, which has all kinds of excellent health benefits. As well as being vegan, it’s also gluten-free as it’s made with Dove Farm’s excellent gluten-free flour. The delectable chocolatey taste and colour comes from the flavonoid-packed, natural raw organic cacao powder.
If you’re looking for a heavenly, lighter alternative to traditional mulled wine, then look no further! This wonderful winter warmer uses cider instead of red wine, which means you can have more of it for the same units of alcohol. We’ve added a lovely whack of Christmas spice, including nutmeg and vanilla pods.
It’s sweetened with lovely, caramelly unrefined organic coconut sugar. The pure pomegranate juice adds a tangy, lip-smacking fruity freshness, not to mention a whole load of health-promoting antioxidants and powerful plant compounds.
This is a great reward for the chef who’s worked hard all day in the kitchen, and can also be made with non-alcoholic apple juice if you fancy foregoing booze altogether.
Brazil Nut, Lentil & Tomato Roast
Dense, nutritious and packed full of savoury goodness, a slice of this and you’ll really feel like you’ve eaten something proper! Brazil nuts are fantastically good for you, and so are lentils, so not only is this super-filling vegan roast a far better choice than any piece of roasted animal – it’s also a far, far wiser, kinder choice for the planet. And you can toss a handful of festive dried cranberries into the mix for an extra tangy, fruity dimension.
Here’s another Christmas classic – a delectable choccy treat without which Christmas wouldn’t be quite the same. Serve this as an excellent alternative to Christmas pudding – kids are more likely to go for the chocolate option, perhaps judiciously so if your Xmas puds are full of booze! This moreish dessert is totally cane sugar-free and full of the goodness of ground almonds and the magical, Christmassy taste of chestnut flour. As it has no wheat flour or anything else with gluten, it ticks the box for all your gluten-free guests too. Now who wants seconds?
Steamed puddings loaded with fruit and spices have been eaten to celebrate Christmas Day in Britain since the early 1700s, and they’re traditionally packed with beef suet and wheat flour. This one, however, keeps all of the festive scrumptiousness but your vegan and gluten-free guests can tuck in heartily too! We’ve used Dove Farm’s gluten-free brown bread flour, which has been specially made for people who are unable to eat gluten, and has a great fibre content. The fat comes from organic rapeseed oil, which contains less than an eighth of the saturated fat found in suet.
Once made, this luscious pudding can be stored for up to a month in a cool, dry place. When served, it’s fabulous flamed with brandy and topped with a dollop of whippable oat cream.
Christmas Spice Hot Chocolate Sticks
Here’s a delectable Xmas treat which is great for curling up in front of a log fire with – perfect for the hard-working cook on Christmas Eve who’s prepared all the veg for the following day and needs some ‘me’ time! These brilliant hot choccy sticks are lovely stirred into some hot milk for a wonderful hot drink, and as well as several traditional Christmas spices they also contain organic cashews and the gorgeous, butterscotch flavour of organic raw maca powder, as well as a dash of pure Bourbon vanilla extract for extra flavour.
Here’s a super idea for Christmas Day breakfast – a stack of fluffy, tasty pancakes full of the warmth and resonance of Xmas spice and the deep, treacly flavour of unrefined organic coconut sugar. We’ve topped it with cashew cream and a handful of festive cranberries for an extra festive twist. These are 100% gluten-free and made using oatmeal, which adds a great whack of fibre and will fill you up until lunch time!
