Turmeric is a very popular ingredient in India. It is used to add a "bitter" note to curries, and it also gives curry a brighter, more yellow colour. Turmeric is also used to colour rice; it's a lot cheaper than saffron for this purpose!
Turmeric has a settling effect on the stomach, similar to that of ginger. The turmeric plant is actually part of the ginger family. Indeed, turmeric is often sold in supplement form, but this is much better and more cost-effective: turmeric can just be eaten in food!
