Italy is the largest producer in Europe with 150 different varieties; the most renowned are grown in Vignola. They even have their own patron saint, San Gerardo dei Tintori, who is celebrated on 6th June at the beginning of the harvest. Fresh cherries are a good source of vitamin C and minerals, particularly potassium.
