Coral Restoration with Healthy SuppliesWe aim to operate in the most eco-friendly way possible. We've been supplying eco-friendly products for years - but we have wanted to do more. In 2021, in our ongoing mission to become more sustainable, we began matching every order placed with us with a charitable donation. We wanted to do something that gave back to the planet. So we offered customers the chance to choose between planting trees or clearing ocean and riverbound plastic. In one year, thanks to a phenomenal show of support - we planted 200,000 trees and cleared 30,000 plastic bottles from the ocean. In the last year, our customers have been able to track their pledges and see in real time when their pledge was being carried out.
This year we are really excited to announce a brand new environmental pledge that will happen whenever you place an order with us. For every order placed at Healthy Supplies, we will plant and populate coral nurseries with the help of our partners. The environmental impact is unique to each order, transparent, and fully trackable. What is Coral Reef Restoration and why is it so important?
Coral reefs are called “the rainforests of the sea”: they cover just 0.1% of the ocean surface yet they are the home to over 25% of all marine species.
Coral reefs not only support biodiversity, they also help buffer shorelines against 97% of the energy in waves. Over 500 million people directly rely on coral reefs for their livelihoods, either as a source of food, economic activity from tourism, etc.
Coral reefs are under immense pressure from the combined threats of habitat destruction, pollution, and climate change. It is estimated that by 2050, 90% of coral reefs might disappear unless we act.
Coral reefs are “at the nexus of our triple planetary crises" of biodiversity breakdown, climate emergency, and rampant pollution.A lot of reefs have suffered from habitat destruction as humans have built out ports and shipping lanes. Other reefs have degraded as surrounding areas have been overfished, upsetting delicate food chains. Many reefs are also polluted from sources as varied as fertiliser runoffs to chemicals in sunscreen.

Coralive restores coral reefs by building underwater coral nurseries in close proximity to damaged or threatened reefs. These nurseries are small metal tables, measuring around 1.3x1.3m in size, upon which Coralive will tie down between 100–120 small coral fragments. Over a period of a few months, these fragments will grow into small colonies, each around 15cm in diameter. When considered large enough to not be mulched by trigger and parrot fish, these small colonies are out-planted onto the existing reef where they begin the process of restoration and healing. One nursery table is able to repopulate 25m2 of reef. The process is analogous to reforestation; over time, the out-planted coral will attract and support more fish, and the ecosystem will rebuild and become more resilient.
