Coconut oil is a versatile cooking ingredient. It is made by squeezing the fresh coconut meat and collecting the oil produced.

Many shop bought coconut oils are refined, pasteurised, contain additives or are bleached to make them appear fresh. The coconut oils that Healthy Supplies sell are not like the shop bought oils. These are high quality, cold pressed, virgin oils which mean that they have not been heat treated and have had nothing added to them or taken away. By being cold pressed, the coconut oil retains its natural goodness, much like other seed and nut oils will when they haven't been heat treated or refined.

Good Stuff in Coconut Oil

Cold pressed, pure, un-tampered with coconut oil, retains many nutrients. This includes special fats called multi-chained fatty acids. These fats include Caprylic Acid, Lauric Acid and Stearic Acid which are found naturally in milk (including breast milk), butter and meat. Many people take coconut oil as a dietary supplement because of these particular fats. Coconut oil does not contain any cholesterol or sodium.

Coconut Oil Uses

  • Coconut oil is the same thing as coconut butter! It is a solid "butter" at room temperature, and a liquid "oil" at body temperature.
  • At room temperature, this coconut "butter" can be used as a spread, like normal butter or margarine.
  • Above 25 °C, coconut oil gradually becomes softer. This is useful for cake and biscuit recipes where you need to beat the mixture.
  • Despite the low melting point, coconut oil has a high smoke point, meaning it is perfectly suitable for pan frying.
  • Coconut oil can also be rubbed into the skin as a moisturiser, or applied to the hair as a conditioner. Very luxurious and versatile!
  • Cold pressed, pure coconut oil has a beautiful fresh coconut aroma. Alone, the taste is very subtle; however, it infuses with other ingredients perfectly, releasing that sweet, appetising flavour. Try coconut oil in a simple cake recipe (by substituting some of the butter) or why not try frying some chicken with lemongrass and red peppers. Mmmm, delicious!
