Sorghum is a fantastic source of fibre and protein, allowing you to have an extra boost of both when added to your favourite muesli or granola, or baked into nutritional/protein bars and homemade breads. It's also known for being a good source of iron. It also provides several other important nutrients too - B vitamins, magnesium, and potassium.
Sorghum can help support our microbiome and improve our gut health by doing so. It's packed full of antioxidants (flavonoids, phenolic acids, and tannins) which can possibly aid in prevention of diabetes, heart disease, and cancer. This plant-based protein is also made up of 75% complex carbohydrates, meaning that it takes much longer to digest compared to much simpler carb-based foods. Sorghum is perfect before a workout because of this.
Sorghum is a versatile ingredient that can be easily cooked in a variety of ways - stovetop, slow cooker, oven, or rice cooker. You can even make a big batch of sorghum, freeze it, and reheat it without losing any of the taste, texture, or nutrition. You can use sorghum as an alternative to, or mixed with, rice, quinoa, lentils, and most other grains/legumes.
